in newtown, the country remains polarized on the issue of gun control. cnn's senior congressional correspondent dana bash is in washington. we know that some lawmakers came forward and expressed interest in introducing legislation about gun control, but i guess the question is will they really in the new year? >> reporter: it really -- the reaction, especially and even among republicans to the nra idea is sort of muted at best. it's not a lot of enthusiasm on capitol hill for the idea of the federal government stepping in and endorsing the idea of all schools having armed police officers. never mind funding it. listen to a couple of senators, starting with a republican. >> we had an armed guard in columbine. we had an assault ban. none of it worked. we're talking about preventing mass murder from nontraditional criminals. people who are not traditional criminals, who are not wired right for some reason. >> since we passed the brady law, the assaults are down. we need to keep working on this, and there are lots of different solutions. >> just because the republicans may not be runn

the attorney general is set to head to newtown, connecticut, today after meeting with vice president joe biden at 1:00. but don't expect to see him. this is not a public event. the attorney general has scheduled to apparently meet with some of the law enforcement officials in that town and then also with some of the first responders who were the first people to enter the sandy hook elementary school and discover the carnage there that ended up being the loss of 20 children and six adults in that school and then, of course, the mother of the killer who was shot in her bed and the killer himself. the attorney general apparently is not traveling with any other senior justice officials to newtown. he will also not be attending any of the funerals or the memorials. and again, you will not be seeing the pictures of him. there's no plan for this to be anything public other than these meetings he's going to have with those law enforcement officials. but, of course, this is a day of more farewells in newtown. six, six funerals in this tiny community, six visitations also. so 12 services. these people b

, the national rifle association is going to address the newtown massacre. maintaining its reputation as washington's most intimidating special interest group. lawmakers take them on at their peril as deborah maggart knows. joining us also is robert painter. deborah, you're a strong gun supporter. you had an a-plus rating from the nra and yet you did something they didn't like and they came after you? >> they did. they had proposed a bill that they wrote that pitted property rights in tennessee against gun rights and they were both very important to republicans. property rights are a cornerstone of our democracy. we tried to work with them on that issue and they simply would not compromise with us. they would not -- >> they wrote this bill? >> they wrote the bill and they would not compromise with us about the property rights issue. it was a mandate that said every property owner, every daycare, hospital, nursing home, city hall, county building and your house, you had to allow people to bring a gun on your property and if you didn't like it, too bad. it was the government mandate. >>
